Happy New Year, everyone! As we kick off 2025, many of us are taking stock of our lives and careers. Maybe you're feeling stuck and dreading your return to your job, needing more meaning or flexibility in your work. Or perhaps you're excited about the possibilities this new year could bring!
Whatever your situation, it's clear that the old "climb the corporate ladder" model is fading away for some of us. Think about it: you join a company, work your way up, and stay there for years (maybe even decades!). This is what career experts like Douglas Hall call a bureaucratic career. But with AI changing the world of work every day and more people choosing to combine working independently, this traditional path is becoming less common.
Instead, we're seeing a rise in what's known as non-linear careers. Imagine your career path not as a ladder, but as a lattice – a criss-crossing framework where you can move in any direction. You could take a step sideways into a new role, move diagonally into a different industry, or even step back for a while to pursue a personal project. This is the idea behind a boundaryless career, where you're not limited by traditional company structures or job titles.
This freedom to move around and explore different options also allows you to build a portfolio career. This means you might have several different jobs or income streams at the same time. Maybe you're a consultant for a few days a week, have your own Etsy shop, and teach an online course in your spare time. It's all about creating a mix of work that meets your need, suits your skills and interests.
Embrace Your Inner "Multi-Hyphenate"
This new way of working requires us to be adaptable and resilient, like chameleons changing their colours to fit their environment. Douglas Hall calls this the protean career, where you're in the driver's seat, constantly learning and growing, and shaping your career to fit your evolving needs and values.
But with so much freedom and flexibility, it can be easy to lose your way. That's why it's important to identify your career anchor – the core values, skills, and interests that truly motivate you. This is your inner compass, guiding you through the maze of career options and helping you make choices that feel right for you.
